What is a BACS Service User Number?

A BACS Service User Number (SUN), is an identifier that allows you to make use of the BACS system when processing payments and is most commonly used when running payroll.

Why do I need one?

Depending on your accounting or payroll software, as well as your bank, you may be required to enter a SUN in order to export your data into Comma.

How do I get one?

The number is issued by your bank or BACS provider, so it is best to contact them in the first instance. They will be able to advise on both if you need one and how to obtain it.

What if I can’t get one?

Depending on the software you are using, this may not be an issue. Likewise, some platforms offer a workaround. For example, if you are using Xero Payroll, simply enter 000000 as your SUN and you should be able to proceed without issue. More detailed guidance from Xero is available here.
